Update on promotional progress of GGHK2023

The Gay Games Hong Kong (GGHK) team is working hard to deliver an inclusive, diverse, welcoming, happy and successful Games in November. We have already secured the required funding and venues, so the Games will definitely go ahead.

This will be the first Gay Games to have been held in Asia and concerted efforts are being made to engage the sporting and LGBTQAI+ communities and their supporters throughout the region and beyond.

We are committed to delivering a “Games for All”, open to anyone over the age of 18 regardless of sexual orientation. Everyone is welcome to take part!

Since Hong Kong’s full re-opening in March, we have seen a steady uptick in registrations and interest in the Games from individuals, teams, sponsors, partners, and their employees. Sports receiving a lot of interest include: badminton, tennis, running, mahjong, and dragonboat racing.

Corporate outreach efforts, in particular, have resulted in many teams signing up across multiple sports categories. These teams will be entered in the system when the individuals register in due course.

Our main focus at the moment is to boost registrations, which have undoubtedly been impacted by the previous uncertainty surrounding Hong Kong’s re-opening. Thankfully, Hong Kong is once again fully open for visitors, which has allowed us to roll out marketing and promotion efforts in multiple markets.

We anticipate that a significant proportion of participants will come from Asia Pacific, which is where we are concentrating our marketing efforts. We expect the majority of APAC registrations to come within three to four months of the event, given the proximity to Hong Kong and the shorter lead time required for travel planning.

Marketing and promotional efforts have been carried out, or will be carried out, in Sydney, Bangkok, Singapore, Manila, Taipei, Phnom Penh, Tokyo, Nagoya, Shanghai, Beijing – with more to come. We encourage everyone to follow our social media for the latest updates.

For example, our float at the recent World Pride/Sydney Mardi Gras was a big success as was the GGHK booth at the GCircuit Songkran party in Bangkok, attended by more than 20,000 people over four nights.

We understand that cost is one of the biggest hurdles for international participants to sign up. Higher costs have in part been caused by curtailed airline capacity globally. We have partnered with different hospitality and airline partners to make travel into Hong Kong easier. Details will be announced in due course. We have also highlighted the “Hello Hong Kong!” airline giveaway in our social media and encourage everyone to try their luck at winning a free ticket to Hong Kong!

Discount promotions and “flash sales” are also held from time to time to encourage early sign-up and spark interest.

We are confident that GGHK will be a successful and memorable event that will showcase the diversity and inclusivity of Hong Kong and Asia.

We invite everyone who shares our vision, whether an ally supporter, straight or identify as a member of the LGBTQ community, to join us in November 2023 for this historic occasion!
