Overview

The Gay Games has been enshrined in unity, progression, and advancement of the perception of LGBTQIA2S+ communities since its inception, and none truer have been than with the Memorial Moment of the International Frontrunners with the AIDS Memorial Quilt.

Since the first Gay Games, commemorative events relating to HIV/AIDS have always played a significant role in representing the endowments of the Gay Games. GGHK is honoured to hold the AIDS Quilt Memorial Ceremony as the first official event to kick start GG11 in Hong Kong - the first Gay Games in Asia.

A special quilt has been created for this memorial service to commemorate people who have passed away from AIDS-related illnesses. Participants of the memorial moment may sign with dedication messages on the quilt.Through this ceremony and quilt exhibition, we hope to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, break down stereotypes towards HIV/AIDS and increase public knowledge on HIV/AIDS prevention.

Program

The Memorial Moment on November 4

The purpose-made quilt will be unfolded and the names of those who have received previous dedications from past Gay Games will be read out.

While the names are being read, people from the audience are invited to approach the quilt and sign new dedications onto the quilt for those who have passed away from AIDS-related illnesses. Dedications can be written as short or long as they wish.

After the ceremony, the signed quilt will be hung on a pre-designed panel located at the Festival Village for the entire duration of GGHK.

The Quilt Workshop

In support of the UNAIDS’ strategy of Reaching Zeros (Zero new HIV infections, Zero AIDS-related deaths and Zero discrimination) by 2030, GGHK is proud to have collaborated with the Hong Kong Coalition of AIDS Services Organisations (CASO) to conduct a series of quilt-making workshops at the Eaton Hotel in July 2023.

Several new quilts were made by members of the community and these works will be displayed alongside the signed quilt at the Festival Village.
