Celebrity Ambassadors swell to over 30 with addition of the boys from TVB Reality Show “Boyscation”
Hong Kong, 28 March 2023 — Promoting Hong Kong as a city of culture, sports, entertainment and community, Gay Games 11 Hong Kong 2023 (GGHK) today unveiled new Ambassadors as well as details of its much anticipated arts and culture programme.
Among the Ambassadors are a group of participants in the reality show “Boyscation” – Louis Ng, Juzco Nam, Ray Ma, Kenny Yang, Nathan Naidu and Kevin Tsai.
As Hong Kong’s very first gay dating reality show, “Boyscation” brings together a group of 12 men from all walks of life trying to find love while exploring the hardships they face with their own gay identity within the family, at work or with friends in a Chinese society.
GGHK also announced the most robust Arts and Culture Programme in GGHK history, including a multi-night Gala Concert series, Visual Arts exhibitions, Memorial Exhibition, and a variety of partner events and parties. This inclusive and diverse programme aims to celebrate the richness of LGBTQ+ culture and the global community.
Gala Concert Series
The Gala Concert Series features multiple nights of international and local pop, dance, classical, and performance artists at a world-class concert venue. GGHK participants will enjoy discounted and priority tickets, while General Admission tickets will be open to the public. The three-night gala event includes performances from:
- Courtney Act (Famous Australian drag performer)
- The Hong Kong Gay Men’s Chorus
- Miss Janni (Hong Kong actor)
- Prumsodun Ok and Natyarasa (Cambodia’s first gay dance company)
- Rainbow Fighters and local dance groups curated by Kids Wan
- Silvy (Thai musician)
- Terence Siufay (Macau and Hong Kong musician)
- Virgin X (London non-binary musician)
- Zelos Wong (Out Hong Kong musician)
More talent will be announced over the next few months.
Young Artists Exhibition
Presented in part by The Hong Kong Arts Collective, the Young Artists Exhibition showcases artists from all mediums under the age of 35. The exhibition will be held at the Goethe-Institut from November 4-11, with an opening event on 6 November.
Memorial Exhibition
In collaboration with local HIV and AIDS organisations, GGHK will host workshops in July to create memorial quilts that will be displayed during the Games. The theme of the workshops is on “approaching zero” in support of UNAIDS’ 2030 vision of “zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths , and a principle of leaving no one behind”.
Memorial Moment
A Memorial Moment will be held in honour of those who have passed away from HIV/AIDS following a Rainbow Memorial Run on the morning of the opening ceremony on 4 November. This memorial service will include representatives from local HIV/AIDS awareness groups in Hong Kong.
Partner Events
Throughout the week starting 5 November, GGHK will work with partners to create supplementary events, including cabaret, dance, immersive performance, drag shows, and other types of entertainment.
Guadalajara Influence
GGHK is currently in talks with the Cultural Department of the Mexican Consulate General of Hong Kong and Macau to incorporate aspects of Mexican culture and contributions from Mexican creators into the programme to show solidarity with our co-hosting city, Guadalajara.
GGHK will be held from 3-11 November, co-hosted with Guadalajara Mexico and held in both Asia and Latin America for the first time in its 40-year history. Under the theme “Unity In Diversity,” the Games aim to promote unity and inclusion as Hong Kong reinforces its reputation as a welcoming, world city.
The Gay Games principles of “Participation, Inclusion, and Personal BestTM” ensure that everyone the age of 18 and above is welcome to participate. There are no pre-selection criteria for any events and everyone is welcome to take part.
Speaking at today’s event, Lisa Lam, GGHK co-chair, said, “The Gay Games have been around for 40 years, but it was never held in Asia in the past. This is Hong Kong’s time, especially as we emerge strongly from the pandemic. By celebrating diversity, love and inclusivity, Gay Games will help show the world the liveliness and vibrancy of Hong Kong this November.
“The Gay Games validates every person and demonstrates what inclusivity looks like. This is why our over 200 passionate volunteers,including myself, are working hard to bring a successful Gay Games to Hong Kong.”
The general registration fee is HK$1,500 (US$193) plus sports fees to participate in specific sports. To ensure that this is truly a “Games for All,”, GGHK is offering up to 1,000 fee waivers for younger people below the age of 25, as well as migrant workers, domestic helpers and minorities, on a first-come-first-served basis.
