Brief history of GG

Founded in San Francisco in 1982 by Dr. Tom Waddell, the Gay Games have become the World’s largest sporting and cultural event led by LGBTQ+ sport participants, artists and musicians. Gay Games is a 9-day international World-class diversity festival with multi-sports, arts & culture events, opening & closing ceremonies organised every four years by the LGBTQ+ Community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, +).

Everyone aged 18/+ is welcome to participate regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, or even training level: Games for All.
The goal of the Gay Games is to emancipate LGBTQ+ people around the world by educating people through sport, arts & culture events — in a spirit of better understanding. The Games are organised by GGHK under license of the Federation of Gay Games. The spirit of equality is enshrined within the principles of Participation, Inclusion, Personal Best™.
The principles of Participation, Inclusion, Personal Best

The purpose of the Federation shall be to foster and augment the self-respect of gay men and women throughout the world and to engender respect and understanding from the non-gay world, primarily through an organised, international, participatory and noncompetitive athletic and cultural event held every four years commonly known as the Gay Games.

While particular emphasis is placed on these specific goals, it shall be a fundamental principle of the Federation that all activities conducted under its auspices shall be inclusive in nature and that no individual shall be excluded from participating on the basis of sexual orientation, sexual expression, gender identity, gender, race, age, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, political belief(s), athletic/artistic ability, physical challenge, or health status.
