Founded in San Francisco in 1982 by Dr. Tom Waddell, the Gay Games have become the World’s largest sporting and cultural event led by LGBTQ+ sport participants, artists and musicians. Gay Games is a 9-day international World-class diversity festival with multi-sports, arts & culture events, opening & closing ceremonies organised every four years by the LGBTQ+ Community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, +).
The purpose of the Federation shall be to foster and augment the self-respect of gay men and women throughout the world and to engender respect and understanding from the non-gay world, primarily through an organised, international, participatory and noncompetitive athletic and cultural event held every four years commonly known as the Gay Games.
While particular emphasis is placed on these specific goals, it shall be a fundamental principle of the Federation that all activities conducted under its auspices shall be inclusive in nature and that no individual shall be excluded from participating on the basis of sexual orientation, sexual expression, gender identity, gender, race, age, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, political belief(s), athletic/artistic ability, physical challenge, or health status.
