Two Cities, Two Continents, Double The Excitement!

For the first time in 40-year history, the Games will be held on two continents simultaneously: Asia and Latin America! On 14 February 2022 we announced that Guadalajara, México will be co-host city for the 11th Gay Games to be held in November 2023. Hong Kong and Guadalajara also hold the distinctions of being the first ever GG in their respective regions.

Co-Hosting FAQ

Co-hosting solves many of the thorny challenges that the GGHK management committee was facing in 2021. For example, using private venues now becomes more economical because we have a smaller number of sports. This also frees up GGHK to re-imagine the event and make it even more relevant to the communities in HK, Asia and beyond, by introducing new games such as mahjong and so on.

We will have two self-contained events under the Gay Games umbrella, so in addition to sports there will be ceremonies, village performances, arts & culture events, and more. We have formed a joint organising committee to discuss all of this and more. Once we have more details finalised we will share with our volunteers, partners and the public.

There is zero chance that we will cancel Hong Kong Gay Games, unless it becomes physically impossible for visitors to enter in 2023. Our team remains optimistic and energised, in spite of the frustrating circumstances in Hong Kong right now that all of us are dealing with every day. In fact, co-hosting was first proposed by GGHK last year as a potential solution to HK’s border challenges, but deemed not feasible due to the tight timeline of November 2021. With the postponement to 2023, this possibility opened up.

Both GGHK and GGGDL will take place as planned on November 3-11, 2023.

There will be 22 sports events – including for the first time Dragon Boat Racing, Dodgeball, Mah Jong and Trail Running. Please refer to the sports section of our website for more detailed information.

With the expected relaxation of social distancing rules beginning 21 April 2022, GGHK will organise a series of promotional events starting June 2022 in Hong Kong and around the world, including pop-ups at major European and Asian sports and community events. With events expected to welcome 2,000 participants per month on average over the months leading up to November 2023, as well as 7,000 participants and 25,000 visitors during November 2023, the Hong Kong-hosted Games are expected to bring 70,000 individuals together to celebrate this global experience.

This is highly dependent on a number of factors including Hong Kong’s border restrictions by November 2023, which is very variable today but we expect will be very clear by the end of 2022. With events expected to welcome 2,000 participants per month on average over the months leading up to November 2023, as well as 7,000 participants and 25,000 visitors during November 2023, the Hong Kong-hosted Games are expected to bring 70,000 individuals together to celebrate this global experience.

Our registration system for both events will need to be ready by Summer 2022, and we expect to open by November 2022 at the latest.
